Music

Fenn student playing trombone
All students at Fenn study vocal music, music history, and theory and composition, and some can even study music composition at an advanced level. In addition, there are opportunities to participate in choral and instrumental ensembles. Lower School boys learn to use their voices as instruments, developing strong vocal technique and singing in harmony. Students also develop music reading skills during these years. In music class, Middle School students use software programs such as GarageBand and Sibelius to compose music, and learn to play the keyboard at a fundamental level. Upper School students who select Rhythm Ensemble classes form a small guitar and percussion-based band and tackle rock, blues, and jazz pieces.

Students can also take up the guitar, ukulele, mandolin or even the banjo by studying with an accomplished folk musician. Additionally, they can learn about Caribbean musical styles and culture by participating in Fenn's Steel Drum class. Upper School students may also participate in hip hop dance class.

Fenn also offers an extensive co-curricular music program. Depending on their grade, boys may join the Treble Chorus, Concert and Marching Band, the Jazz Ensemble, the String Ensemble, and occasionally smaller ensembles and chamber music. Eighth and ninth grade students can also participate in the Fenn Musical. All band members are also eligible for private lessons with skilled professional musicians.
